In episode 1, I sit down with Massachusetts Association of Biology Teachers President Brian Dempsey. Brian is a biology teacher at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School. During his 20 year teaching career, Brian has spent several of his summers conducting research at local institutions, including examination of phylogenetic relationships of local fungi at Clark University, Wolbachia infection of mosquitoes in a partnership with the Marine Biological Laboratory, and receptors used by Leishmania parasites at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. In 2006 Brian received the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award of Massachusetts and in 2009 the Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence. He has successfully written several grants totaling $20,000 used to purchase biotechnology equipment for ABRHS. He has also authored papers in The American Biology Teacher and The Science Teacher.
